StoryBoards Northwest, in partnership with C.A.C.A. Seattle, invites you to a fascinating journey into one of the most significant yet often overlooked chapters of American history.

In 1885, anti-Chinese violence erupted in Rock Springs, Wyoming Territory, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 Chinese miners and the destruction of Rock Springs Chinatown โ€” one of the deadliest acts of anti-Chinese violence in United States history. More than a century later, archaeological research is helping bring these forgotten stories to light.

Featured speaker Dr. Laura Ng, historical archaeologist and Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Grinnell College, will share insights from her archaeological excavations and research on the Rock Springs and Evanston Chinatowns. Through artifacts, historical records, and community stories, Dr. Ng reveals how archaeology provides a powerful lens into the everyday lives of Chinese immigrants and the challenges they faced in the American West.

The program will also highlight recent efforts to increase public awareness of this history, including a congressional resolution introduced by Rep. Judy Chu recognizing the 1885 Rock Springs Chinese Massacre.

Whether you are interested in archaeology, Chinese American history, immigration, the American West, or social justice โ€” this engaging presentation offers a unique opportunity to learn about a pivotal historical event and the ongoing work to preserve its legacy.

Seattle-area residents are encouraged to attend in person for the opportunity to meet Dr. Ng, ask questions, and enjoy light refreshments. A virtual option is also available for those joining from outside the area.

Don't miss this eye-opening event โ€” register today and discover how archaeology is helping uncover the stories that history nearly forgot.
